DIY Dry Shampoo that actually works

If you are a daily dry shampoo gal, like I am then this article is for you. I will not only give you the recipe to make your own RIGHT NOW but I will also outline the 4 biggest reasons why this all-natural 2 ingredient alternative is something you will have wished you found sooner.

Why make the switch?

There are several benefits when making the switch from a commercial product to something you craft in your own home but I have picked 4 of the biggest ones to outline in a little more depth here. Here is an outline:

Cost-Effective

Commercial dry shampoos are not cheap. I know when I used to buy them over 5 years ago now, I would always look for the best sale. The best ones were still over $10.00 even when on sale. This recipe will save you hundreds of money if you are used to buying commercial spray can dry shampoo.

Natural Food Grade Products

There is comfort in knowing that this product is safe enough to eat. If you are used to inhaling the fumes of the spray can dry shampoo you will understand this statement. When you are only using 2 ingredients from your kitchen you are eliminating any risk of synthetic chemicals or potentially harmful additives like sulfates, and parabens found in some of the commercial brands. This can be extra beneficial for anyone with sensitive skin or allergies. Avoiding these chemicals by creating your own dry shampoo may contribute to healthier hair and less residue build-up on the scalp clogging pores.

Reduced Environmental Impact

This is a great way to become more eco-friendly without any extra costs. With this method you are reducing packaging waste, saving fuel from not having to drive to the store and eliminating waste from empty bottles.

Customization with a Quick and Easy Preparation

When I say quick, I mean quick with less than 2 minutes from start to finish this recipe requires minimal time and effort compared to shopping for commercial options in a store. This is also completely customizable by adding more cocoa powder for darker hair or less for blond hair. You also have the ability to add essential oils to achieve a specific fragrance based on your personal preferences.

How to make your own DIY Dry Shampoo

This recipe is for a 30ml bottle - adjust accordingly to the size of your bottle

You will need the following supplies:

  1. cocoa powder

  2. corn starch

  3. a small bowl

  4. a whisk for mixing

  5. a container to store your dry shampoo

Steps to follow:

  1. measure 1 tbsp of cocoa powder into your bowl

  2. add in measure 1 tbsp of cornstarch

  3. mix thoroughly

  4. pour into your bottle and put the cap on

Tips:

  • add more or less of either cocoa or cornstarch depending on your hair color. I use a 1:1 ratio for brown hair with highlights.

  • add in 3-4 drops of your favourite essential oil before mixing thoroughly. I like to use orange as it compliments the cocoa powder nicely

How to use your dry shampoo

There is no wrong way to use your dry shampoo but having a container with a small shaker top lid is definitely the easiest to shake on your roots and blend in with your fingertips. If you are not sure if you will like this product feel free to keep it in the mixing bowl you used and add it to your roots with your fingertips or a clean old makeup brush. You can add as much or as little as you like just be sure to blend it with your fingertips. You will notice that this will also add some texture to your hair and help to give it an extra push when trying to achieve a volume style.

Remember, while there are advantages to DIY day shampoo, each individual experience may vary and it's important to test the mixture on a small scale to ensure its compatibility with your hair.
