Hello February

Updated: Feb 7, 2023

If you are here for some February Must Do's to get your garden growing this summer, you're in the right place.

In this article, I have compiled a detailed list of items you should think about, plan and do this month to get you ready for a prosperous growing season.

This will be a great way to boost your savings from groceries this summer by growing fruits and vegetables that you and your family love to eat. This is also a great way to get the kids outdoors more this summer.

Best Tips for Garden Planning 2023

  • Start a Garden Journal

This is the best tip I have, start a garden journal. A few years ago I purchased a small notebook from the dollar store that I have been using every year now and it is so helpful. I use it to keep track of everything I sow, grow and harvest. I will make a list of all the things I want to grow, seeds I need to buy, when I start my seeds inside, when I transplant, when I sow seeds in the ground, when I harvest, what did well or what failed. I also have started to use it to track what produce I am buying for water bath canning or pressure canning and how much I pay for that item so next year I can look back and compare between the two.

  • Know your zone

It is so important that before you start to plan and invest money in seeds that you know what growing zone you are in. Knowing your growing zone will allow you to plan for what can actually grow where you are planning your garden. Once you know which zone you are in, write it down in your garden notebook so you wont have to look it up every year. I have attached a picture of the zones for you but here is the direct link you can go to as well

  • Space

Before you start getting too deep into planning all of the wonderful things you can grow, take some time to think about where you live, what kind of sunlight you get and how you plan to grow. Ask yourself if you are going to be using pots, raised beds or a traditional ground garden and how much time, energy and money you have to buy or build these things. This will help you to plan according to what type of space you have. One thing I like to do is sketch is out. Seeing it on paper helps me to visualize where the tall items should go like Peppers and Tomatoes and where the the shorter stuff like lettuce can be.

  • What will you grow

I always suggest you start with growing things you already know you will like to eat. Are you a big salad person who would love to have fresh lettuce just outside your door, or maybe you are wanting to make a batch of pickles this year and growing your own cucumbers would help you achieve that. This is also a great time to get your family involved by asking the kids what they would like to grow. Including them in the planning of your garden will get them excited about it and they will be more willing to help when it comes time to planting.

  • Get seeds and supplies

The most important thing to do this month is to start to gather your supplies and GET YOUR SEEDS. I can’t stress that enough as seeds become harder to find the closer we get to spring. You will be able to find seeds at your local hardware store or Home Depot now or if you like to shop from the comfort of your home I highly recommend Veseys Seeds. You can shop directly from their website or even request a free catalog by clicking the link below

When it comes to supplies I tend to use what I have on hand. Especially, when starting seeds indoors because almost anything will work. Here is a list of a few things you can start to collect that can be used to start your seeds;

  • Old egg cartons

  • Old plastic cups - any size

  • Egg shells

  • Old take out containers

  • Yogurt tubs or small yogurt cups

  • Old juice jugs

  • Old newspapers or flyers

Start to stash these things away for a couple weeks or until you have enough for the amount of seeds you are starting indoors.

Make sure you pick up a bag of potting soil when you are getting your seeds so you are ready when you go to start sowing your seeds.
